History’s Greatest Air Battles

The airplane was less than a decade old when it first appeared as a weapon of war during the Italo-Turkish War in 1911. The Italians used airplanes to observe Turkish troop positions, as well as dropping bombs on their enemy. By 1915 the airplane had matured into a weapon capable of bombing enemy troops, strafing them with machine gun fire, and fighting other airplanes for control of the sky. At the end of World War One it was evident to military planners that success in future wars would be determined by domination of the skies over battlefields, both on land and at sea.
